Working with video, photography and installation Susan MacWilliam investigates obscure and overlooked histories, and cases of perceptual and paranormal phenomena. Her subjects include psychic mediums, ectoplasm, X-ray vision, telepathy, table tilting, remote viewing and dermo optical perception. Susan’s videos and installations have been exhibited nationally and internationally and have received numerous awards and extensive press coverage. She has worked on artist residencies in Ireland, Trinidad, Slovenia, America and Canada, and in 2009 represented Northern Ireland at the 53rd Venice Biennale. Her mid-career survey exhibition, MODERN EXPERIMENTS, featuring works from 1998–2016, toured four venues across Ireland in 2016–17. Susan MacWilliam has worked with prominent parapsychologists and psychical research institutions including Danish-American poltergeist investigator William G Roll and the Dermo Optical Perception Laboratory of Madame Yvonne Duplessis in Paris. Her sustained engagement with the Parapsychology Foundation, New York, and the family of its founder, the Irish medium Eileen J Garrett, has resulted in a body of five films. Susan has worked with historical archives including the Hamilton Family fonds (T G Hamilton spirit photograph collection), University of Manitoba; the Records of the Society for Psychical Research, Cambridge University; the Parapsychology Laboratory Records, Duke University and those of the Rhine Research Center, Durham, NC.
