Catriona Leahy 11102018

Catriona Leahy’s work engages in sites wherein a particular dissonance manifests itself temporally, spatially or aesthetically, where anachronistic objects, architecture or particular landscape tropes usher the past into focus with the present. To that end, her interest lies in the remains of cultural phenomena that have been displaced, or have lost their significance in our “progress-driven”, globalised society. Residues on the landscape of our industrial past and by extension, the impact this human intervention has had on our environment also provide material for investigating the repercussions of a society driven by progress. Through a process of intervention in the image using print, moving image, installation and sculpture, attention is drawn to transformations, latent aspects and layered histories. A native of Cork, Catriona is a MA Print graduate of Royal College of Art, London. Before joining the staff team at NCAD in January she taught in the Fine Art departments at University of Northampton and Winchester School of Art. She is the recipient of numerous awards, most recently the Arts Council Ireland Visual Arts Bursary Award (2018, Round 2). Other awards include Arts Council England Bursary (2015/16), Florence Trust Artist in Residence (2015 - 2016), Culture Ireland Grant (2011, 2016, 2018), Arts Council Ireland Travel & Training Award (2009, 2011, 2012, 2013). Recent exhibitions include Unfolding Landscape, De Cacaofabriek, The Netherlands (2018); Encountering the Land (Artworks Open) Visual, Carlow (2018); Architecture Invisible, Swiss Church, London (2017); Relief in Time, Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Enschede, The Netherlands; Coup de Ville, 3rd International Triennial, Belgium (2016).
